Banned Book Week 2012

Did you see our display in the YA Fiction area yet? If not, there is still time! Banned Book Week 2012 is winding down (from September 30 to October 6), but we'll leave our display up a few more days. Banned Book Week isn't just a special, one week issue. The issue of censorship and banning books is a 24/7 occurrence. We have this week in the fall to bring awareness to the fact it happens and that someday, we hope, no one will face these issues.

Until then, let's celebrate our freedom to read what we want!

By the way, you can check out those books, take them home, and happily tear away the paper covering the book to free the book (Just don't rip the book)! Can you recognize the center book there? See which favorites have been banned in the past from the links below.

October Teen Events at WVPL

Wow! Fall is here, school has started and we're gearing up for another round of College Planning Workshops. October has a lot of events just for teens as well as cool books to check out. Stop by! Join us for one or all of the events (or some). We hope to see you soon!

One big event to look out for is our Friends (Blue Bell Chapter) Used Book Sale happening Saturday, October 13 to Tuesday, October 16. Proceeds from the sale benefit the library. Visit here for more information.

WVPL’s Hunger Games
Saturday, October 4 at 1 PM to 2 PM
Calling all tributes. You are invited to WVPL's Hunger Games Event. There will be a brief training session before you participate in WVPL's own Hunger Games. If you are between the ages of 12-17 and are up to the challenge, please register here as we can only take 24 tributes.

Teen Read Week: Food Monsters!
Thursday, October 18 at 7 PM
Cheesy monsters? Candy monsters? What kind of monsters can you make with food? We'll provide the monster parts (a variety of food), and maybe some instructions (maybe, but we're not sure yet). You can join us to make your own Monster Food creation (we'll take pictures but you can too)! If there is time, we'll discuss your favorite books with lots of silly questions like if you were stranded with only one book, which would it be?

College Essay Workshop
Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 7 PM
Join a tutor for Chyten Educational Services in Blue Bell to learn winning essay elements and pitfalls to avoid.

WVPL - Hunger Games Event!

Calling all tributes and Hunger Game fans! Do you have what it takes to survive the Hunger Games? We're looking for tributes to join us on Saturday, October 6 at 1 PM to 2 PM for a brief training session followed by our own live action Hunger Games.

That's right. We're hosting The Hunger Games at WVPL in Blue Bell on Saturday, October 6 from 1 PM to 2 PM. For ages 12-17. You must register to attend and you must register by Thursday, October 4.

The brief training session will include:

• Knot Tying
• Archery
• Plant Identification (is it edible?)
• Make your own MockingJay Pin
• A small obstacle course

After that, we'll be hosting a Challenge to see which team of tributes survives!

At 2 PM, enjoy a free showing of the movie on the library big screen. We'll provide soda and popcorn.
